Getting started

After installing the extension in a browser, an account will need to be created that will connect the different browsers.

Register an account

Open the extension by clicking on the Cache Nut icon in the browser’s toolbar. If using the web app, go to the homepage.

To create a new account, click the “Register this device” button. When prompted, provide a name that will identify this browser (for example, Firefox) in the account. No personal identification is requested or required. After the account is created, the account details can be found by clicking on the application menu icon (menu) in the upper left corner, and selecting “Account” from the menu. Note the account id to be used in a later step to verify that your browsers are associated with the same account.

Connect another browser to an account

To connect another browser (for example, Chrome) on a different device to the account, an access code will need to be created from a browser that is already connected to the account (like the one in Firefox from above). To get an access code, open the extension or homepage, and click on the application menu icon (menu) in the upper left corner, and select “Account” from the menu. In the account information page, click on the “Add a new device” button, and an access code will be shown. This code is needed by the other browser (ie: Chrome) to connect with the account.

In the other browser (Chrome, the one to be connected), open the extension or homepage, and click the “Connect to another device” button. Enter the access code and follow the instructions on both browsers to complete the connection. This will ensure that the browsers will be sharing the same account.

info This multi-step process is necessary to ensure that both browsers have securely connected, with no possibility that an intermediate (hostile) entity is intercepting shared data.

Once completed, the account id must be identical on both browsers, and can be verified in the account information page by clicking on the application menu icon (menu) in the upper left corner, and selecting “Account” from the menu. If the account id is the same in both browsers, then they have been successfully connected and data can be copy-pasted between the browsers. The device id will differ between the browsers, and is normal.

Copy data to Cache Nut

The following data can be copied with the extension:

  • Text on page: highlight any text from any web page, then right-click on the text, and select “Copy text to Cache Nut” from the context menu.
  • Link location: right-click on a link from any web page, and select “Copy link to Cache Nut” from the context menu.
  • Image URL: right-click on an image from any web page, and select “Copy image URL to Cache Nut” from the context menu.
  • Page or tab location: select the tab with the location to be copied, and copy the URL location by clicking on the Cache Nut icon in the browser’s toolbar, and click on the application menu icon (menu) in the upper left corner, and selecting “Copy tab location” from the menu.
  • Text from another application: if there is text in the system clipboard from another running application, the text can be copied by clicking on the (add) action button in the lower right-corner of the clipboard history page (or clicking on the application menu icon (menu) in the upper left corner, and selecting “Copy clipboard content”). The system clipboard is not accessible on all browsers.

Due to browser’s API restrictions for the web application, only text from the system clipboard can be shared, by clicking on the (add) action button in the lower right-corner of the clipboard history page (or clicking on the application menu icon (menu) in the upper left corner, and selecting “Copy clipboard content”).

Paste data from Cache Nut

Any data copied to Cache Nut can be accessed from the history page by clicking on the Cache Nut icon in the browser’s toolbar, or from the web application homepage. The items in the history page will be accessible for a limited time (30 minutes) before it is permanently removed.
